Following the extreme bushfires of January 2003, the ACT Government commissioned the Emergency Medal in March of 2004 to recognise the efforts of those who worked so hard to preserve the community.

The obverse of the 38mm wide medal symbolises the Canberra flower, the Royal Bluebell surrounded by wind and flame. The reverse lists the values: Courage, Leadership Teamwork, Professionalism, Innovation, and Integrity.,
RIBBON
Manufactured by Toye Kenning & Spencer in the UK and s hand stitched to each medal, the 32 mm wide ribbon is made of high quality fabric in colours that symbolise the city of Canberra; the fires it endured; and the colours of the uniformed workers who fought the fires
