About this medal
Instituted by The Queen by Royal Warrant dated 9 February 1990. The medal was awarded only during 1990 to 3,632 selected persons in recognition of the contribution they had made to some aspect of New Zealand life, especially the various 1990 celebrations. The medal was struck in bronze-gilt metal by the Royal Australian Mint.The reverse bears the official 1990 symbol, a kotuku, white heron, The medal was accompanied by a certificate bearing the signatures of The Queen, Governor-General and Prime Minister.
