New Zealand Fire Brigades Long Service and Good Conduct Medal

Preamble
ELIZABETH THE SECOND, by the Grace of God Queen of New Zealand and Her Other Realms and Territories, by Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith, to all to whom these Presents shall come,

GREETING!

WHEREAS We are desirous of signifying Our appreciation of long and meritorious service by members of Fire Brigades and Fire Services within Our Realm of New Zealand:

WE do by these presents for Us, Our Heirs and Successors, institute and create a new Medal and We do hereby direct that it shall be governed by the following rules and ordinances:

Firstly: Style.—The Medal shall be designated and styled The New Zealand Fire Brigades Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.

Secondly: Description.—The Medal shall be of silver and circular in shape, bearing on the obverse the Crowned Effigy of the Sovereign, and on the reverse the inscription New Zealand Fire Brigades—For Long Service and Good Conduct and a representation of a fern frond.

Thirdly: Ribbon.—The Medal shall be worn from the left breast suspended from a ribbon thirty-two millimetres in width, of vermilion having in the centre narrow stripes of yellow, black and yellow.

Fourthly: Eligibility.—Those eligible for the Medal shall be persons not being members of Our New Zealand Armed Forces) serving as full time or part time members of a Fire Brigade or Fire Service operated or maintained by the New Zealand Fire Service Commission or a Government Department in Our Realm of New Zealand on or after the first day of April 1976, and whose conduct is, in the opinion of the New Zealand Fire Service Commission, of such good standard to warrant the Medal.

Fifthly: Service Required.—The qualifying period requisite for the Medal shall be fourteen years full time or part time, or an aggregate of fourteen years full time or part time, service in a Fire Brigade or Fire Service operated or maintained by the New Zealand Fire Service Commission or a Government Department in Our Realm of New Zealand.

Sixthly: Clasps.—It is Ordained that a Clasp to the Medal, to be attached to the ribbon when the Medal itself is worn, may be awarded for each additional seven years of service subsequent to that for which the Medal was awarded, and that for each Clasp awarded a silver rosette shall be added to the ribbon when worn alone.

Seventhly: Reckoning of Service.—It is Ordained that the following service may be reckoned towards the qualifying period for the award of the Medal or any Clasp thereof:

a Full time or part time service in a Fire Brigade or Fire Service operated or maintained by any local or
public authority within Our Realm of New Zealand before the first day of April 1976:

b Full time or part time service in a recognised Fire Brigade or Fire Service within a country of the
Commonwealth of which We are Queen, which has not been recognised by the award of an official long
service and good conduct medal, provided that such service is in the opinion of the Minister of Internal
Affairs, or a Minister of the Crown deputising for the Minister of Internal Affairs, deemed to be of a similar
standard to that prescribed for Fire Brigades and Fire Services within Our Realm of New Zealand.

c Full time or part time service as a member of Our New Zealand Armed Forces in the Fire Service operated
by the Ministry of Defence in Our Realm of New Zealand, which has not been recognised by the award of an
official long service and good conduct medal.

Eighthly: Registration.—The names of all those to whom the Medal is awarded shall be recorded in a register kept by the New Zealand Fire Service Commission in Our Realm of New Zealand.

Ninthly: Names of Recipients.—The name of the recipient shall be engraved or stamped on the rim of the Medal.

Tenthly: Order of Wear.—In the official list showing the order in which Orders, Decorations and Medals shall be worn, the New Zealand Fire Brigades Long Service and Good Conduct Medal shall in Our Realm of New Zealand be placed immediately after Our New Zealand Police Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.

Eleventhly: Miniatures.—Reproductions of the Medal in miniature, which may be worn on certain occasions by those to whom the Medal is awarded, shall be approximately half the size of the New Zealand Fire Brigades Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, and a sealed pattern of the miniature Medal shall be deposited with and kept by the Clerk of Our Executive Council of New Zealand.

Twelfthly: Delegated Powers.—Delegated powers to make awards under the terms of this Our Warrant shall be vested in Our Minister of Internal Affairs in New Zealand or in a Minister of the Crown deputising for Our Minister of Internal Affairs, save only on a recommendation by the New Zealand Fire Service Commission.

Thirteenthly: Other Awards.—It shall be a condition of the award of the Medal in any Fire Brigade or Fire Service that any unofficial or local long service or good conduct medals for wear in the said Brigade or Service shall not be worn in association with Our New Zealand Fire Brigades Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.

Fourteenthly: Forfeiture and Restoration.—It shall be competent for Our Minister of Internal Affairs or Minister of the Crown deputising for Our Minister of Internal Affairs save only on a recommendation by the New Zealand Fire Service Commission, to cancel and annul the conferment of the Medal or any Clasp thereof on any person, and also to restore the Medal or Clasp which has been so forfeited.

Lastly: Annulment of Rules and Ordinances.—We reserve to Ourself Our Heirs and Successors, full power of annulling, altering, abrogating, augmenting, interpreting or dispensing with these rules and ordinances, or any part thereof, by a notification under Our Sign Manual.
