Medal : The medal is authorised and awarded to those New Zealand Korean War veterans who received either of the two medals for the Korean War. The medal is worn after all other medals in the group, under the catagory of a Foreign Award.
The Medal is the same one that as also awarded to US veterans in 2000/2001
Note : This medal can still be applied for at this time. If you think that you are eligible then please contact us for further information
This is the original award as authorised by the South Korean Government. Note that the ribbon bar is the only place on which the red and blue ying yang is worn.
Due to the unavailability of the Korean manufactured ribbon, this US made ribbon, as in the left view, is being used as replacement ribbon.
TYPE 1
This one has the ribbon of the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation (RoKPUC), and sporting a large enamel ying yang on the ribbon. The medals were manufactured in Australia and have a distinctive pale goldish finish to the medal. The reverse of these medals is also printed in English with two squares for engraving the recipients details.
Some of these varieties are known to eminate from the US but with a more accurate Korean reverse.
TYPE 2
This second variety is a very good likeness to that which comes from South Korea with the darker bronze finished medal but sometimes it has a Korean reverse and other times an English reverse
The ribbon to this second variety is of unknown manufacture, but by the weave is likely to be from the US, it has pale blue narrow edges and a wider yellow centre stripe
UNAUTHORISED VERSIONS
The medals below are all of improper manufacture and not authorised for wear in New Zealand
TYPE 3
There is yet another variety seen, but in miniature only and it has a ball and ring suspension to replace the usual half moon style. It is unknown as to where this medal was made or which style of ribbon it has.

War Service Medal
TYPE 4
Mounted with the US manufactured ribbon, this miniature has a bar type suspension
